Moravian Karst
The Moravian Karst is one of the most important limestone formations in Central Europe comprising more than 1100 caverns and gorges including the Amateur cave (Amatérská jeskyně), 34 km long, which is not open to the public at present. Unfortunately only four caves out of this large number are open to the public. These are the Punkva Cave (Punkvevní jeskyně) with its underground river, mostly very deep, about 40 m. There you can see the bottom of the famous Macocha Abyss (Macocha). The next is Kateřinská jeskyně (Kateřinská Cave) with its unique limestone columns. The Balcarka Cave (Balcarka) is full of colourful stalactical decoration. Sloupsko-šošůvské caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) are characterised by huge corridors and underground gorges.
